Squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck are etiopathogenically associated with risk factors such as smoking and alcohol. Research over the past 10 years has provided increasing evidence for the implications of HPV 16 and 18 subtypes in the etiology of oropharyngeal cancer.

Materials and method. In this presentation, we will review the main clinical aspects of HPV infection in the oropharynx, the types of HPV associated with oropharyngeal cancer in a similar way to cervical cancer, but also the peculiarities of HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer.

Precisely establishing the HPV etiology of an oropharyngeal malignancy may lead to changes in the oncological therapeutic protocols in oropharyngeal cancer.
